An Accessory Extravaganza
Fun fact #1: According to Vogue, Florence is often referred to as the world’s fifth fashion capital. Today we’ll see why.
We start in Florence’s San Lorenzo district, which is often described as an open-air museum. Named after the 3rd-century Christian martyr, the neighborhood is a sacred destination combining priceless art treasures in a setting of breathtaking architecture. At the same time, it is also a bustling medley of faces, cultures, flavors and fragrances.
Ultra-Luxe Leathers
Known for its fine, handcrafted leathers, it’s only natural that our first stop is a Nancy-approved shop featuring soft-as-butter handbags, accessories, coats, belts and more—all at amazingly affordable prices. Among our other must-sees: a tiny local San Lorenzo shop featuring unique, uber-cool leather jewelry.
After a full morning of shopping, we’re ready for a leisurely lunch. There’s a saying in Italy: “a tavola non s’invecchia”—at the table one does not grow old. (The longer the dining experience, the better.) The expression “when in Rome” is especially apropos—the typical Italian mid-day meal is a time to relax with family, friends and colleagues.
Today, I’ve chosen a concept eatery popular with locals. Known for its fresh, seasonal cuisine, the menu is a mix of culinary oxymorons: hot-cold, soft-crunchy, sweet-salty. Equally innovative are the cocktail offerings, each created with unique, unexpected ingredients. The restaurant also features a not-to-be-missed on-site shop offering an interesting mix of tabletop and kitchen accessories.
Head Over Heels
After lunch, get ready for your Cinderella moment. We’re headed to a boutique entirely devoted to fabulous footwear handmade by authentic Italian artisans. The owner of this very special shop is a personal friend of Nancy’s—and former jet setter—who after years of traveling abroad, set out to prove that chic shoes could also be comfortable.
The highlight of our visit: The opportunity to design an exclusive pair made to our exact specifications. This is customizaton in the truest sense. It starts by choosing a style: flats, mules, sneakers, sandals, block heels, wedges and more. Then, you’ll select heel height, color and materials, from metallics and patent to calf hair and raffia. Signature elements are also available, including toe and back cap, trims and embellishments. (Fun fact #2: The shop works with the same “accessoristas” who apply Swarovski crystals to the most fantastical Red Carpet-worthy footwear.)
To further personalize your experience, appointments will be limited to two people at a time. Rest and relax while you wait for your appointed time or explore any of the area’s myriad of shops. Nancy especially recommends her favorite glove store, a terrific hat boutique and a shop featuring luxury linens.
Dinner tonight is at an outdoor trattoria known for its authentic Tuscan cuisine and superb pasta (the gnocchi is an absolute must). Adding to the allure: delicious house wine, spirited ambience, great views and a lively staff.
