From chic suiting to high-shine glamour, here are eight need-to-know trends from Paris Fashion Week…
Ladylike Suiting
Feminine skirt sets provided a fresh alternative to trousers. I especially loved the color and versatility of Chanel’s plaid suit and bag. Worn together, it makes a stunning statement, but each piece will mix and match with everything in your wardrobe. Also noteworthy: Christian Dior’s houndstooth jacket and skirt, updated for Spring with perforated hiking boots and a raffia belt.
LOVE the styling!
Mad for Metallics
As designers sent one luminous look after another down the Spring catwalks, metallics couldn’t help but take center stage. Among the standouts: Balenciaga’s voluminous, over-the-top gold ballgown. (Did I mention the giant bow?) At Saint Laurent, high-shine separates were much more wearable—a glittery black jacket can easily become a new season staple.
Spring is all about statement sparkle.
Orange Crush
Worn head-to-toe, this notice-me shade made a bold statement at Stella McCartney and Nina Ricci. Equally chic: Isabel Marant’s more casual interpretation of the trend: a puffed-sleeve top and slouchy jean looks cool, modern and effortless in of-the-moment orange denim.
Stripe It Rich
Pops of color gave this French fashion favorite an instant update. Altuzarra showed a mix of multi-hued shirt dresses, slit-front skirts and easy-to-wear knits. Any one would be a covet-worthy addition to your new season wardrobe. Totally different but equally chic, Louis Vuitton’s black and white striped trousers paired perfectly with an abstract print jacket.
A good pattern mix is always on my radar.
Warm Weather Leather
From Saint Laurent’s off-the-shoulder dress to Balenciaga’s super sexy jumpsuit, black looked anything but basic. At Givenchy, super chic leather separates ran the gamut, from a skin-baring crop top to super chic double-breasted trench. Spring’s new twist? A range of innovative vegan options for sustainably-conscious fashion girls.
White On
White looked absolutely perfect in every iteration. At Valentino, a feathered mini shared the catwalk with a sheer tiered skirt; at Chloe, dresses were pretty and polished. Other designers added a touch of modern-day bohemia with vintage lace and crochet knits. Alexander McQueen went a step further with signature handiwork and upcycled fabrics. Even if it’s just a beautiful blouse or on-trend rope blend, you’re going to want to add something white to your wardrobe.
Seventies Revival
Always a source of sartorial inspiration, 70s-style was evident throughout the Paris collections—think patchwork, retro prints, haute-hippie dresses, artisanal accessories and tons of denim. Among the quintessentially cool pieces receiving a new-decade update: jean skirts, trouser suiting, acid-hued blouses and flower-power everything. There’s a reason designers keep resurrecting these much-loved classics.
Thrill of the Frill
There was no shortage of enormous ruffles and fluttering peplums on the Spring runways. Yet along with big and bold (seen at Balenciaga, Giambattista Valli and Dries Van Noten), some designers went with a less-is-more approach. Lace accents upped the glam factor of a Chanel denim jacket; at Miu Miu, frilly shoulders added interest to painterly-print dresses. Ruffles will definitely be on everyone’s spring fashion radar.
